What is Rock Drilling?

Rock drilling is a percussive technique widely used across the stone and construction industry to create holes in bed rock or concrete. Specifically, it helps to provide safe removal of bed rock and facilitates resin anchors for joining  rock or concrete segments together.

Utilising both air or hydraulic systems the rock drills can be mounted on tracked machines or bespoke mobile units to ensure a professional delivery and safe operation via its remote controlled system.

Furthermore, the machines can be set up to drill vertically, horizontally or on the angle to suit your project requirements. Drill heads range from 16.0mm – 65mm diameter and are capable of drilling in excess of 6.0m depth depending on substrate conditions.

Much like percussive drills, rock drilling operates on a hammer action principle. However, instead of worming the dust up the hole the rock drill will flush the drill head using air or water. This method helps to keep the drill head free from unwanted debris building-up behind the drill head and prevents binding up during the rock drilling process.

Where can Rock Drilling be used?

Rock drilling is ideal for concrete, masonry and rock applications including:

• Starter bar dowel bar drilling
• Induction line drilling
• Resin and mechanical anchor hole drilling
• Forming holes to aid Hydraulic Bursting

When combined with a DARDA burster, the holes formed within the concrete provide a sleeve for the hydraulic wedge to be inserted and expanded. Consequently, once complete, the concrete will crack and separate into manageable lumps to enable safe removal. Due to its compact size the hydraulic burster pack is ergonomically suited to work in restricted areas where larger machinery would be compromised.
